ASC Junior Rifle (Flyer at the bottom of the page)
The Aurora Sportsmens Club will hold a NRA Basic Rifle Course for juniors, (boys and girls – ages 10 through 20). This course will run for three Saturdays from 9:00 to 5:00 at our facility in Waterman, Illinois. The dates for the 2017 program are April 1, April 8, and April 22.
This is an intense program consisting of classroom and live fire, with one-on-one instruction on the range, followed by a written exam. The majority of our students graduate, shooting at the NRA level of Sharpshooter with most on their way to achieving their Expert Qualification. Those in Scouting will also be able to complete their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge requirements.
There will be morning classroom sessions starting at 9:00am on each Saturday of the program. Students will receive coached shooting instruction on the range in the afternoon each week. Students are required to provide their own lunch, snacks, and beverages for the entire day along with their own transportation from the classroom to the range and back to the classroom to help with cleaning rifles following the afternoon shooting session. Rifle cleaning is a required part of the class as is attendance at the classroom session each Saturday.
The classroom for this course will be at the Clinton Township Community Center in Waterman, Illinois. The range is off of Rueff Road, about 1 mile south of US 30 in Waterman. Directions will be provided to all those that enroll.
There is an opportunity for those who have attended the Junior Rifle class previously to continue practicing their marksmanship skills, making progress toward Expert Qualification and having the experience of live match competition for the CMP Rimfire Sporter course of fire. The advanced class has morning shooting sessions held from 9:00 to 11:30 on each scheduled Saturday. The advanced class is expected to help with setup in the morning and can stay over to the afternoon to help coach beginners or continue shooting on a space & rifle available basis. There is no cost for this advanced program, thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of the NRA, and is limited to 20 shooters who have previously attended the ASC Junior Rifle Program.
